Who wants to please God?
What do you need in order please God? Faith.
[Heb. 11:6] And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
What is faith?
[Heb. 11:1] Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
ESV study note: Faith consists of persistent hope in the promises of God, and it is such faith, as 10:39 indicates, that obtains salvation on the last day.
What is hope?
to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence
And what do we hope for?
[Romans 5:1-5] Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
[1 Thessalonians 1:2-3] We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
[1 Timothy 1:1] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
[Titus 1:1-2] Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time
Our faith is being sure of Christ Jesus, the glory of God, eternal life in heaven. We should be confident that we’ll get to see what is currently unseen.
Are you sure of what you’re hoping for?
To be honest, I’d like more confidence. I’d like to see a glimpse of heaven just to be more certain. But God planned for people to just trust Him and have faith. He’s given us all we need to know – and there is plenty of evidence!
[1 Peter 1:3-9] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
How has your faith been tested?
[2 Tim. 4:7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
My hope is that all of us, at the end of our lives, can say this.
